On Wednesday afternoon, David was in his office at the Bent Nâ Dent when Edith Fisher Lapp stormed in and dropped the newspaper on his desk. âYou need to do something about this.â
âWhat?â
She pointed a finger at the newspaper. âThat.â
David picked it up and saw a cartoon of a man who looked remarkably similar to Hank Lapp, standing behind a card table. His sign read JOKES FOR SALE. 10 CENTS 5 CENTS 1 CENT.
âThat newspaper reporter is behind this. Heâs been poking fun at us for years. Itâs high time you do something about it.â
âEdith, as I recall, in the past youâve enjoyed those cartoons. I believe you said that they kept us humble.â
âThat was when they were about Walt Yoder. That old goat needs a little humbling. But two weeks in a row, theyâve been aimed at my Hank. These are just downright mean.â
âIs that how Hank feels?â David knew, without a doubt, that Hank was loving the attention. Heâd been in the Bent Nâ Dent earlier today, laughing about them, showing off the cartoon to anyone who walked through the door. âHank has a pretty thick skin.â Unlike his thin-skinned wife.
âThatâs only because Hank doesnât realize when someoneâs making fun of him.â
âI donât think these drawings are meant to be mean-spirited. Theyâre really just little slices of the Plain life.â
âExactly. And should be kept private.â
âWhen Hank was selling his jokes at the market, it was very public. Very loud.â
She narrowed her eyes. âYouâre defending these cartoons because theyâre good advertising for your farmersâ market.â
âIâm not!â Though they were.
âLetâs just see how you feel when youâre the object of one of these vicious satires.â
Vicious satires? That was dramatic. He peered at the illustration to find a name in the corner, but there was none. âEdith, are you positive that the newspaper reporter is the one who draws these?â
âAbsolutely.â
âHow do you know?â
âPatsy Glick told me so. She reminded me that heâs been taking pictures of the Plain folks for years without permission.â She pointed a finger at one of the photographs taken at the farmersâ market. âLook. Right there. See Fernâs face?â
David had to hold the paper up to his nose to identify Fern. The figure was turned halfway around at her booth.
âIâll speak to the editor. Heâs a good man.â He hoped that might be enough to appease Edith. When she didnât make a motion to leave, he added, âIs there anything else youâd like to say, Edith?â
âThis farmersâ market is a bad idea. I knew it from the start. Weâre meant to live in this world but not be of it.â
Patience, patience. David cleared his throat. âSo you think that selling produce our local farmers have grown is being of this world?â
âYou shouldâve kept it to just the Plain farmers, instead of letting everybody and their dogs in.â
âAmish-only vendors couldnât support the market. Or Amish-only customers, either.â
âI donât mind if the customers are Englisch.â
David leaned back in his chair. âLet me get this straight. You donât want to
